Tipping in Egypt is an expression of your appreciation or gratitude for the efforts of the persons who offer you services. Therefore, it is expected everywhere in Egypt not just in tourist places. Tipping depends on your rating for the presented services. The Egypt’s prices are low comparing other tourist destinations so that tipping is allowed. Some Egyptians consider it as a good manner to thank the person who offered you a certain service.
During your trip to Egypt, you will hear the word “Baksheesh” or Ikrameya. It means a tip or a charitable gift. Understanding that tipping is important element during your tour in Egypt is better. The tipping is a common in some tourist destinations. However, it is spread much throughout Egypt. It is the way of living to increase the income of low Egyptian salaries.
When someone provides you with a service, they may request Baksheesh. These services may be for waiter after having your meal in a restaurant etc. Likewise, some a public restroom may include Baksheesh as a mandatory.
You do not need to give tips for everyone asks you. If the service was perfect or deserve, you can give good tips according your estimation. Appropriating tips if the service was good is allowed. If you did not like the service, you do not have to pay any tips at all.
Remember that Egypt has many sellers who try to sell you things. Therefore, you should not be afraid to say “La Shukran” (means No thanks!). Then, you can avoid them if you really do not desire to buy from them.
However, Egypt is the perfect place to visit with relative cheap prices. Keep in mind that tipping should not affect your journey to Egypt.
